Structured solutions: strategic advantage in a volatile and evolving market

November 3, 2026

Structured solutions in Asia Pacific are moving from the margins of insurance and reinsurance into the mainstream of capital and risk management. As volatility rises, balance sheet discipline tightens and growth becomes more selective, insurers are increasingly using bespoke transactions as a practical way to align risk transfer with capital efficiency. Demand is growing from cedants, while supply is expanding from both established reinsurers and new market entrants.

Social inflation and volatility

As social inflation continues to affect insurers with meaningful liability exposure, many are considering loss portfolio transfers (LPTs) or adverse development covers (ADCs) to reduce earnings volatility and release capital that would otherwise remain tied up by regulatory requirements. That capital can then be redeployed into growth areas, improving capital adequacy and creating a more agile and resilient balance sheet to respond flexibly to future challenges and opportunities.

For many carriers, the question is no longer simply whether a risk can be retained, but what is the most efficient form of capital to support that risk. This shift in mindset has helped structured solutions gain traction as insurers seek to support profitable growth, reduce earnings swings and make better use of finite capital. They can also help manage reinsurance needs through the cycle and strengthen long-term relationships between insurers and reinsurers.

Bespoke solutions

At their core, structured solutions are tailored reinsurance and capital arrangements designed around a client’s specific needs. They can include structured quota shares, LPTs, ADCs and multiyear covers. What sets them apart is not just the structure itself, but the outcome: flexibility, precision and balance sheet relief that standard protection does not always provide.

This is why structured solutions are increasingly viewed as strategic tools rather than niche transactions. They are no longer confined to legacy books or special situations. In APAC, well-capitalised ompanies are using them proactively to manage portfolios, smooth earning volatility and improve the economics of their business, while enhancing shareholder returns.

Just as important, these solutions are typically built through collaboration. The most effective transactions emerge from close dialogue between the cedant, broker and reinsurer. That process allows the parties to identify the underlying business issue and design a structure that responds directly to it. In a market where traditional protection may be expensive or insufficiently tailored, that customisation can be decisive.

Growth in structured solutions

The continued growth of structured solutions also reflects a broader change in how insurers think about capital and reinsurance. Companies are becoming more deliberate about where they deploy capital, where they hold it and where they transfer risk more efficiently. Structured solutions provide additional optionality and give management greater control over the balance sheet over time.

Demand for structured solutions is rising in APAC because of volatility, competitive pressure and the search for stronger returns on capital. As insurers become more sophisticated in their use of reinsurance and capital tools, these transactions are likely to play an even greater role in portfolio strategy.
