The Global Risks Report 2023 has been published by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Marsh McLennan. In this video, March McLennan’s Richard Smith-Bingham offers insights to complement the report. He describes the importance of businesses pursuing resilience frameworks to anticipate future crises and deal with shocks more effectively.

“These days, you have to think beyond assets and operations to how a whole enterprise behaves by itself,” Richard said. “It’s not just about safety and security and continuity issues anymore but about corporate strategy more fully.”

“Resilience is really about systems thinking, and that’s absolutely critical here,” he continued. “The risks are interconnected, but of course, every firm doesn’t live within its own space, it has multiple dependencies, and those dependencies have their own distinct vulnerabilities. All this has to be factored in.”

Beyond businesses, resilience is a major concern for governments around the world as well.

“Resilience is super high on government radar as well—national resilience sits in a sort of trinity with national security and national sustainability objectives,” Richard continued. “Often, those 3 different components reinforce each other, and on occasion they conflict and compete, and those differences need to be resolved.”
