In this episode of Insurance Uncovered, the podcast of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), John Connors, Chief Information Officer, and Ridge Muhly, Managing Director and Regional/Mutual Segment Leader, discuss how artificial intelligence is moving from an industry buzzword to a practical business tool across the (re)insurance landscape, helping manage information, sharpen risk insights, and working more efficiently, while keeping trusted, human expertise at the center of the client experience.
“We see that the advantage, particularly in the reinsurance industry, you’ve got a deep, proprietary data infrastructure that often you’ve built over a long time, huge amounts of embedded institutional knowledge, and experts who know how to apply that knowledge to client circumstances,” John said. “I think where the race is, all of us are kind of swamped with data and information. Using AI to surface that stuff faster, to make sure that we’ve got individuals that, in the key moment for clients, they are able to have that sort of stuff at their fingertips.”
Ridge described how ensuring data is current and accurate is extremely important.
“Getting the information, making sure it’s current, making sure the models are updated to recognize the current activity in the storms, I think is really important,” Ridge explained. “Now, you can ask for more data. It gives you the ability to synthesize it easier, you can bring it through, so we’re going to get a better picture, and better perspective that we can then share with the market.”
