Earthquake doublet: Two strike-slip earthquakes ruptured the transform plate boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates in short succession – an M7.2 followed 40 seconds later by an M7.5. The events occurred near the town of Yumare at shallow depths of 20.3 km and 10.0 km, respectively.
Severe shaking: Maximum shaking reached intensity VIII-IX (severe to violent) on the Modified Mercalli Scale (MMI) in Puerto Cabello, San Felipe (the capital of Yaracuy state), Catia La Mar and Ocumare de la Costa. Significant damage has been reported, including collapsed buildings in La Guaira and Caracas, as well as damage to and closure of Simon Bolivar International Airport. 250 buildings across La Guaira, Caraballeda and Playa Larga have been reported damaged. Significant disruption of utilities, roads, and bridges. More is expected to be revealed in the coming days.
Human toll: Human losses are significant, with 188 confirmed fatalities and at least 1,520 injured people in hospitals. 157 missing have been reported as of 4 pm local time on June 25, 2026. These numbers are expected to rise.
